"Wednesday 23rd May 2018. An ascent of Ben Macdui (Gaelic 'Beinn Mac Duibh') 1309m/950m, Cairn Lochan 1216m/91m, Stob Coire an t-Sneachda 1176m/65m and Cairn Gorm 1244.8m/145.8m in the Northern Monadh Ruadh (Cairngorms), from Coire Cas , Highland. 18.0km, with 1075m of ascent. 8hrs 50mins.
Until the middle of the 19th Century, when accurate maps started to be produced, many thought Ben Macdui (see at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Macdui) to be the highest mountain in Britain and Ireland. It was only in 1847 that the Ordnance Survey determined that Ben Nevis was definitively higher. Ben Macdui sits in a central position in the eastern section of the Cairngorm plateau, with what are effectively subsidiary peaks radiating out to the north, east and south. From these directions the mountain lacks grandeur, appearing as a vast featureless dome of granite boulders. However, when seen from the west over the gulf of the Lairig Ghru, it takes on a more fearsome aspect, with crags, cliffs and steep slopes of boulders and scree.
I had climbed the mountain, from the south, from Linn of Dee, in October 2000. It was not a good day to be on the plateau, as we were beset by hill-fog from ..." — marktrengove2 • May 23, 2018

"Cairngorm Club Centenary Meet. I ascended to the summit of Ben Macdui with two fellow members. We departed at 18:00 from Muir Cottage and went via Derry Lodge, Carn a' Mhaim, and Sròn Riach to reach Ben Macdui at 23:55. The president, Anne Cordiner, made a short speech which was followed by a toast. I descended with many others over snowfields and boulder fields to reach SW corner of Loch Etchachan and hence round south side to reach east end about 01:45 for a bivvy. The main celebration of the centenary took place at the Shelter Stone a few hours later." — peter43 • Jun 20, 1987

"Cairngorm Club meet. From the car park at the bottom of the Cairngorm chair lift. I went via Fiacaill Coire an t-Sneachda and Fiacaill Ridge to Cairn Lochan, Carn Etchachan, and the N and main tops of Beinn Macduibh. I went on to Stob Coire Sputan Dearg and Creagan a’ Choire Etchachan. I went out to Sgurr an Lochan Uaine and back, passing to the south of Creagan a’ Choire Etchachan, and a little to the west of Stob Coire Sputan Dearg to reach Carn a’ Mhaim. I continued to Luibeg Bridge and Derry Lodge to reach Linn of Dee. Misty from time to time." — peter43 • Sep 11, 1982

"With Katherine and Jonathan Bellarby, Wolfgang Kriesten and Hedda Kriesten. From Linn of Dee to Derry Lodge. Up Glen Derry to Hutchinson Memorial Hut and on to Ben Macdui. Descent over Derry Cairngorm and Little Cairngorm, then steeply down slopes to Glen Derry. Warm and sunny all day." — peter43 • Jul 30, 1982

"With my children Katherine and Jonathan. From Linn of Dee car park via Glen Lui and Glen Luibeg to the summit of Sron Riach. We passed very near the summit of Stob Coire Sputan Dearg† to reach the summit of Ben Macdui. Return was by the same route except that Stob Coire Sputan Dearg and the actual summit of Sron Riach were omitted. It was mild in the glens but there was a biting wind and slight snow higher up. Calm on summit with good views all round. Not much snow for the time of year.
†Subsequent visit showed that the summit of Stob Coire Sputan Dearg had been reached.
