"I was in a group of 7 friends new to the Cairngorms, we were attempting to climb Ben Macdui (1309m) but turned back after a 10 miles of hiking at 1113m height due to worsening conditions and lack of visibility, but not before conquering Sron Riach, itself higher than any English peak. "Cairngorm Club Centenary Meet. I ascended to the summit of Ben Macdui with two fellow members. We departed at 18:00 from Muir Cottage and went via Derry Lodge, Carn a' Mhaim, and Sròn Riach to reach Ben Macdui at 23:55. The president, Anne Cordiner, made a short speech which was followed by a toast. I descended with many others over snowfields and boulder fields to reach SW corner of Loch Etchachan and hence round south side to reach east end about 01:45 for a bivvy. The main celebration of the centenary took place at the Shelter Stone a few hours later." — peter43 • Jun 20, 1987
"With my children Katherine and Jonathan. From Linn of Dee car park via Glen Lui and Glen Luibeg to the summit of Sron Riach. We passed very near the summit of Stob Coire Sputan Dearg† to reach the summit of Ben Macdui. Return was by the same route except that Stob Coire Sputan Dearg and the actual summit of Sron Riach were omitted. It was mild in the glens but there was a biting wind and slight snow higher up. Calm on summit with good views all round. Not much snow for the time of year.
†Subsequent visit showed that the summit of Stob Coire Sputan Dearg had been reached.
