"Tuesday 17th April 2018. An ascent of Beacon Hill 306m/103m, from Llandogo in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, South Wales. 9.0km, with 310m of ascent. 2hrs 10mins.
To break my journey up as I drove home from Devon, I decided to stop en route for a short hill walk from the Wye Valley near Tintern on the Welsh side of the river. It was rather a dreich day, so nothing of significant altitude seemed sensible. I selected the wooded Beacon Hill.
I parked by the village hall in Llandogo and, after a short hike south on the pavement past the village shop on the A 496, took a very narrow lane which zig-zagged up the steep escarpment on the valley side through deciduous woodland. In the hamlet of Cleddon the lane levelled off on the plateau. I continued west, joining a wider road. I don't normally enjoy walking on roads, but it was quiet today. In addition, it passed through an area of heath and bogland which would have been a very unpleasant experience to traverse without the assistance of tarmac under my feet.
At a junction I turned north, climbing steeply up the lane on the western flank of the hill. This provided a misty view west to the village of Trellech in the valley..." — marktrengove2 • Apr 17, 2018
