"Tough hike. Started at plaque. Lots of overgrown areas requiring a machete:) Natural bridge formation near top. Historical note, was called "N*gger Mtn" then euphemized to "Negrohead Mtn" by USGS, then changed to "Ballard Mtn" due to research by a Moorpark College professor who identified that it was an old, racial epithet. John Ballard was a free slave from Kentucky who settled the area over 100 years ago." — srphilip • Sep 26, 2011
"Six Ballard descendants (Ryan Ballard (me), Nickolas Ballard, Christopher Ballard-Bartee, Anna Sullens, Asa Sullens, and Ahijah Sullens) trekked up the mountain under the guidance of our "bushwhacker" Ken Hudnut. There was lots of brush and the trail wasn't easily discernible but, we made it! Ken graciously let me touch down first at the peak. We left our own handwritten marker (I wonder if it's still there!). " — ryanballard • Dec 21, 2009
