"9/21/24: Made the drive up Boreas Pass Rd. It took forever to get there as everyone and their uncle was seemingly headed to Kenosha Pass for the beginning of peak leaf peeping. Can’t blame ‘em as the colors in this area really are spectacular this year. The drive up to Boreas Pass was even better (busy but nothing like Kenosha) and I would consider this a Top 10 CO scenic drive for this time of year. There was also the first big snow of the season forecast for Saturday night through Sunday: up to 18” in the northern Mosquitoes but only 6” for this area of the Divide. The plan was to do each of the two main summits of both Bald and Boreas Mtns; and even with the late start (1pm) I figured I could at least be on my way back down to the Taco before the weather started to really set in. I was wrong! The amazing views on the way up Black Powder Pass Trl were short lived as thick wintery clouds formed over the Tenmiles and were quickly engulfed. I figured we were probably next; just a matter of how long. Not long! Less than 400’ up the south slopes of Bald from Black Powder Pass I quickly got engulfed in a spontaneous white out with 40mph+ winds, graupel turning to freezing rain and gene..." — LoneWolf • Sep 21, 2024
