"Drove up from Las Vegas with the Las Vegas Mountaineers Club to do a winter ascent of Wheeler. 7 drove up on Friday with the intention of starting on the trail around 830am. Myself, Amber & Jodie drove up early Saturday morning. We started on the trail from the Lower Lehman Creek Campground (around 7300 ft) at around 1130am. The road was closed from there. There wasn't much snow down low, but we put on our snowshoes about 1.5 miles in. The plan was to camp at Wheeler Peak Campground at about 10000 feet. We made it there around 3-4pm, taking our time. Once there, we found out that everyone else had just gotten there. All but a couple people left their snowshoes in the car, thinking that they wouldn't need them & had been postholing all day to camp. Yuck.
On Sunday, we woke up around 2am. Amber, Jodie & I hit the trail at about 330am in snowshoes. We were going to hike to Stella Lake, then gain the saddle between Wheeler & Bald, but we decided instead to ascend early & caught the trail a little further north, which we took to the saddle. Jose, Justine & Adam caught up to us on our way up to the saddle, where it was extremely windy. We started up the ridge anyways & g..." — Kevin • Mar 19, 2017
"First peak of 2-Peak traverse (Bald-Buck), started from main Wheeler Peak TH (10,150'), hiked ~0.7 miles on Wheeler Peak trail then x-country to Bald, open terrain with a couple downed trees " — BradStemm • Aug 5, 2016

"Drove up from Vegas. After climbing Wheeler & Jeff Davis the day before, we wanted something a bit easier. We decided to bag Bald Mountain & Buck Mountain. Parked at the small dirt pull-out about 1/10 mile from the Wheeler Peak Summit Trailhead & hiked cross-country straight up the mountain to Bald. The hike was steep in parts, but nothing too difficult. The trees were fantastic (until we got about the treeline, of course). There were still some sections of snow that had to be negotiated near the peak, but nothing too difficult. From Bald, we traversed the ridge to the saddle & back up to Buck, which was pretty simple & straightforward. The peak wasn't too spectacular, but it provided good views of the other 3 peaks we climbed this weekend! After a brief break, we decided to take the direct route back to the Jeep, over the boulder field. We immediately regretted this decision, but soon enough, we were past it & meandering our ways through the trees again. Nice easy day!" — Kevin • Jun 8, 2014

"Dona as a side trip from Wheeler Peak. Off trail but open and easy to navigate route to the top. Excellent views in all directions from the top. Took a different off trail route down but it was so open that I could easily see the Park trail below me. I wrote a couple blogs on this peak and the park in general: http://mikegourley.blogspot.com/2014/02/the-great-basin-in-nevada.html and http://mikegourley.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-great-basin-in-nevada-part-two.html" — grsmguy • Aug 23, 2008
