"Back in the the Lake District for the first time this century thanks to a spur of the moment sidetrack breaking journey on a long M6 run. My afternoon rediscovering the fells did mean I’d later cop multiple night time motorway closures and not reach home till 2am but it was well worth it; I’d forgotten just how pretty the whole area is and should get back here more!
Parked near Peter House Farm (210m above sea level already) for a clockwise circuit on good paths. Route: Dash Falls>Bakestall>Skiddaw>Carl Side>Longside Edge. Good weather albeit cloudy on top. The sun finally came out in descent making this the highlight of the day for scenery. Longside Edge ridge was nice with some lovely views, making it a good candidate for a winter ascent I thought.
A flattering haul of eleven summits bagged as every little bump seems to be named/classified..

"Day 2 of a short break in the Lake District. We did a favourite circular walk, around the Skiddaw group of hills. Went up Ullock Pike, then along scenic ridge to Long Side, Carl Side, Skiddaw 3054ft, and its various tops, before dropping down to Whitewater Dash falls, via Bakestall. The N slopes of Bakestall have a steep drop called Dead Crags, so care is needed in mist. After dropping off the hill, the return walk is via the Cumbria Way footpath

"1st day of a 2 day break in the Lake District. A hot sunny day, we set off from Bassenthwaite village to do a circular walk, taking in several peaks. We walked along a number of paths through fields and farms, to reach the long ridge, up The Edge, to Ullock Pike. From here we continued along the ridge, over Longside, enjoying good views over Bassenthwaite Lake and the rest of the Lake District peaks, to Carl Side 746m. We then ascended steeply up the slated path to Skiddaw summit ridge and its tops 931m. After a brief stop, we continued N, dropping down steeply and then up onto the summit of Bakestall 673m, where we enjoyed good views of the Northern fells and across the Solway Firth to Scotland. We then dropped down Birkett Edge above Dead Crags to Whitewater Dash Waterfalls, where we joined the Cumbria way footpath back to the road and our start point." — davidlong • May 22, 2012
"We did a circular walk of the Skiddaw massif, starting from a minor road near Bassenthwaite village. Firstly going up Ullock Pike via its NW ridge, over Longside edge to Carl Side. From there we cut across the scree slopes of Skiddaw and up onto Little Man. From here we climbed up via the south top onto the main summit of Skiddaw and then descended northwards, over the north top and down to Bakestall, then down by Dead Crags to Dash falls, where we picked up a good track back to the start point." — davidlong • May 10, 2009
