"Humid, mid 60s. Took the marked red trail up and the unmarked trail down. The unmarked trail is the better of the two, not as much erosion, a smoother grade and only 0.1 mile longer. Red trail is sparsely marked, very eroded and some small slides to climb. " — Tree2topper • Sep 18, 2021

"Solo. Saranac 6 Winter 5/6.
Drove straight up off a midnight shift feeling less than great. I’m continually surprised at how many cars I see at trailheads on weekdays now. My week days off use to be my solitary time out in the woods, things have really changed over the years.
Pulled into the parking area with multiple other cars already there. Was on trail around 10am.
Since I was here years ago they’ve really spruced up the trail markings. The trail was well broken, only one patch of ice toward the beginning. The rest of it was packed snow just slippery enough to warrant spikes. I took the same route up and down, no loop.
I forgot how steep this little thing is and I struggled to keep my heart rate under control with my fatigue from work and the drive but made it to the top before I knew it. The weather was supposed to be partly sunny but it was very grey and dreary out with winds picking up and temperature dropping as I started my descent. I couldn’t find the summit marker on the tree, I either overlooked it or it’s gone away since I first hiked this six years ago. I saw two hikers on my way up and 3 more on my way out, plus 2 gearing up when I got to my car. Must..." — kellieirene • Mar 9, 2021

"Tom, Black and I hiked Baker after finishing Scarface on a beautiful sunny blue skied winter day. Trail well traveled. Snowshoes all the way. Nice views for a short hike. 1 hour up and 45 minutes down and off to Saranac Village to ring the bell." — garyogden • Jan 9, 2021
"Kim and I were up in Lake Placid for the weekend and wanted to at least get out and stretch our legs on Saturday, so we decided to hike Baker. It was a nice and easy hike out and back, but there was a ton of ice on the route. Definitely need some sort of traction to get to the top safely. We watched the Saranac Lake St. Patrick's Day parade in the village after we finished the hike. " — LGH-Tom • Mar 14, 2020

"Hiked with Tom. Sketchy ice, which made the descent a little slower than the ascent. Weather was nice though and we enjoyed some time in the Saranac Lake village after completing the hike. " — Kim-Stilson • Mar 14, 2020

"We spotted a nice break in the bad weather and decided to go for a short hike that would get a couple BHC members another peak in the bag for their Saranac Lake 6er challenges. A very cold day but nothing that the right clothing couldn't help with :-)" — RangersApprentice • Feb 8, 2020

"Alot of cars there which is great for me bc I hike alone with a little child, having others there makes it more comfortable. We saw a bunch of deer in the yard of the house at the bottom. We didnt get out in time and started getting dark, I was scared. Luckily there is a house about half way up and those ppl came home while we were out there. Wish I had more or others to go with.

"Short but sweet, steady incline back up the first mountain I ever climbed... but 30 years later. Trail is in good shape and easy to follow. Moderate grade never lets up, but only lasts 30 minutes. Nice view of the village and surrounding waters, high peaks in the distance. Black flies still hanging around, mostly at the summit." — ndru-virus • Jun 15, 2019
"Weather was pretty crappy today. So I decided on a short hike of Baker. With the low cloud cover, I was not concerned about missing the views. Since I wasn't impressed with the views the last time anyways. 1.8 miles." — newenglandwarrior • Jan 6, 2019

"Couldn't ask for a better day if hiking in the Spring, a little warm for Winter and the lack of snow made these hikes doable with just micro-spikes but we carried in our snow-shoes in case. Both Haystack and Baker trails were well worn and made for an easy going with great views from both summits." — hbotc • Jan 5, 2019
