"A very long out and back to baker and #4 mtn. The trail was pretty lightly used but easy to follow and the section between the two peaks was very gentle. Somewhat limited views from both peaks but with the help of the fire tower you could see 360° on number 4" — noahthackeray • Aug 22, 2026
"Number Four Mountain (2,890 ft) and Baker Mountain (3,520 ft). We took advantage of our proximity to these two hard-to-get-to mountains in the Moosehead Lake Region, during our stay up at the Medawisla AMC Maine Woods Lodge. 13 miles, out-and-back. Number Four has had some work in recent years. Baker, less so … but the lack of regular traffic has left a beautiful path of mixed conifer needles that is a nice contrast to the bouldering that composes most higher-elevation hiking in Maine and NH. Both are wooded summits, but there are spots where amazing views of Moosehead (west) and Baxter State Park (northeast) can be found. Number Four is still capped by an intact, old fire tower, albeit without a platform." — rwthacke • Aug 22, 2026
"The hike starts with climbing Number 4 Mountain (not shown in the GPS track). From Number 4 Mountain its another 4.7 miles to in dense softwood forest to the summit of Baker. This new trail (in 2019) is lightly used and needs to be worn in more. The summit is somewhat flat causing it to be viewless. Some views can be seen on the way down looking out over or through the trees around the trail." — ribo • Aug 25, 2019
