"Second time was the charm. Made it to the radio tower in an hour and a half, but it took me an hour from there to the true summit which was only
.3 miles. Gnarly bushwhack!! Two very nice views on top one east towards the lake & one south towards the high peaks. if anyone is interested, I'd
advise them to do it over the weekend while the trail is broken. Be sure to park outside the gate as the town does close it in the afternoon." — billsussdorff • Feb 21, 2020
"Failed attempt of Averill Peak. I followed ski tracks from the water tower until they veered into the woods @ about the 1 mile mark. Not wanting to break
trail on the access road, I followed the tracks into the woods on what was a blazed trail for quite some time thinking maybe this did go somewhere
near the top. Well, I was wrong. After awhile, I discovered this was a back country ski trail & it soon ended. Thinking maybe I could bushwhack my
way from here to the top was a bad idea as I got bogged down in waist deep snow with no summit in sight. I resigned myself to the fact that this wasn't
gonna happen today & turned back. When I got back to the access road, I discovered a snow cat had passed & gone to the top!! If I had only waited, I
could've followed its tracks. Oh well, will definitely come back to try again." — billsussdorff • Feb 11, 2020
"We hiked up via the old access road for the communication shelter on a very warm day. The access road is loose gravel and similar to climbing slide scree. The best part of the hike was the bushwhack to the summit. The herdpath has a few areas of blow down but is very easy to navigate. The views from the summit are nice and it is one of the few signed HH summits." — deb-and-rob • Aug 24, 2016
