"Awesome little hike with open views of the Mojave and surrounding lava field. We did the walk around the rim and then into the crater before heading back. Also checked out Roy’s Motel over on Route 66, pretty cool." — jodola • Feb 2, 2024
"This was a climb of 2 peaks in a day.I first started out by making the long drive out to Amboy to start my day. The trail was pretty boring with only information signs and views of surrounding mountains and the crater to keep me interested. Then we saw the crater labyrinth and climbed up to the rim around the crater. The views from the actual summit were beautiful. Then we climbed down and then climbed back up the rim to the second summit. The downhill on the rough rim was cool though. BTW the summit views were okay. " — lc444 • Feb 28, 2023
"Drove to 16700 Crater Road, Amboy, CA, 92304. Started the 1.1 mile hike from the picnic area parking lot. There are three benches (with backrests!) spaced along the trail that provide valuable shade from the burning hot sun during the summer. Trail climbs steeply up the west side and enters the crater through a “blowout” in the side. You don’t climb over the rim to enter the crater." — thesearcherextraordinaire • Mar 28, 2020
"Parked on Crater Road, which is west of the town of Amboy and just off of Route 66. I followed a use trail from there to the prominent black crater in the distance. Once reaching Amboy Crater, I checked out its inside and then around the high points of the crater rim." — MikeTeeples • Oct 11, 1997
