"I spent a couple of days near Spinalonga gazing up at these mountains thinking how menacing they looked but my hike up it was pretty benign. There is a path from the eponymous town to the north west but I had been advised there was a lot of loose scree on this so instead I followed the dirt track from the north. Leaving the asphalt I drove a little along this track to around 1050m, then left the car in the shadow of the trees and followed the track up. One could in fact conceivably drive all the way up, as the road is used for the small church and large antenna on top, and is in a good state. Early on I took a shortcut to avoid a hairpin but otherwise stayed on the road all the way up. At around 1300m it levels of into a small plateau and the hill rises up before you, still a good 150m in height to go, but deceptively close. The road winds up and eventually one reaches a large antenna, its electric generator breaking the silence some. There is a tiny church with a bell, and I couldn't resist breaking the silence by giving its cord a good few yanks.
