"My Golden, Kali, and I parked by the trailhead, next to a Forest Ranger and another truck, then headed up the Burnt Mill Brook Trail to the Royce Trail.
The first mile or so was fairly flat and easy, with a few good spots for Kali to run down and swim in the brook. The next mile went from moderate to moderately steep and seemed to go on forever, though part of that may have been me stopping to take pictures constantly.
Finally we came to the Royce trail and took the West Royce trail up .7 to the summit and found the old torn down fire tower. This .7, at least most of it, was quite steep and rugged, but absolutely gorgeous to me, with beautiful mosses and peek=a-views, as well as lovely trees. Challenging terrain, but because I was so busy looking at everything, it was less exhausting than the lower trail.
There were very nice lower ledges near the top, with good views. The summit cairn was in an area that may or may not have been the official summit. I never found a pin, but I wandered around a bit to see if there was anything higher and found the old abandoned fire tower. There were no views there, but it was interesting anyway.

"Great hike, made a point to point out of it. Up the Basin rim trail to West Royce, then hiked over to East Royce and down East Royce Trail. Some mud and a few patches of snow still out there. Cloudy view at West, but great view on East.." — blackwolf_03278 • May 20, 2018
"The first mile of this trail is a nice flat walk in the woods. The second mile up to the junction is considerably steeper and rougher. But by the time we got to the junction, we were in clouds all the way to the summit. Maybe 100 ft visibility. This is #52 finishing of our 52 with a view quest. But it might as well be 52 with a stew. Of course the sun was shining back down in the parking lot. We enjoyed sitting on the rocks in the Wild River. Beautiful area." — Alohabuffy • Aug 4, 2017
"Headed out to Route 113 to grab the trail in to hit West Royce for the 52wav. The forrest was beautiful and after passing East Royce I never saw another human until I was back on the East Royce Trail. ATTENTION: LOST AND FOUND: I left my Leki hiking poles at the trailhead parking lot when packing up my car....if you find them please contact me!" — shay-shay • Jul 4, 2017
"Took Basin Trail from Basin Pond up to Rim Junction. Followed Basin Rim Trail to West Royce, descended via Royce Trail. Short roadwalk down Rt 113, back across the New Hampshire border to Basin Pond." — wrobichaud • Apr 20, 2012
