"12 March 2022, ~7:20am start. Temp was ~30degC with almost 100% humidity under the forest cover. We took approx 4.5hrs (incl rest stops) to reach the summit but a person is good condition and skilled in mountaineering should/might be able to reach the summit in 3hrs. The descent was a little quicker, taking approx 3.5hrs. Conditions got very difficult and slippery when it started to rain when we were halfway down the mountain. I drank 2L water on the ascent and another 0.5L at the summit, another 0.5-1L was required for the descent, " — ronaldsue • Mar 12, 2022
"Stay current, stay focused !
Lakegala is a mountain located more towards north side of Knuckles range which is considered to be the toughest peak to climb in Sri Lanka. Final 150m of Lakegala mountain has to be accessed by a very steep rocky outcrop which will tes the mental & physical strength of hikers.
Climbing Lakegala is considered as pinnacle of Sri Lankan hikers. Very few have summited this mountain in Sri Lanka. As to many of the hikers, this was an undying dream for me and Dananjaya. As Dana and me being hiking partners, we were always looking for a window to climb this mountain. We got our window from Yaman headed by Mayura. While we were coming back to Colombo, I wanted to write down the experience we had. More importantly how our mind while surviving 2 days in jungle in hard conditions, which I thought will be a good read for beginners in hiking.
Essene of hiking isn’t about getting an awesome view after a harder climb. It’s way beyond that. For you to get started, keep this in mind.
“What you get by reaching your destination is not nearly as important as what you will become by reaching your destination.”

"Terrifying 8 hour bus ride to Dhunche, by 4. Hiked 1300 meters up from town to Sing Gompa in less than 3 hours for the night. Next day hiked to Gosaikunda at 4320 meters, went up to Laurebina pass that afternoon to acclimate at 4630 meters. Woke at 3 AM the next morning and found a use trail on to the ridge line above to tag peak 4730 meters. Unfortunately found a lot of loose class 4 and has to hunker down until sunrise so I could spot a safe route. Summits 4730 just as the sun rose. Dropped into the basin towards Surya and slogged through the morraine up to a decent scree chute that put me on the summit ridgeline. Took another hour and a lot of scrambling to hit the summit of Surya, my highest solo climb to date. Of note, there is a peak about 100 meters shorter to the west that incorrectly has a Surya Peak plaque on it. Left the summit at about 9:30 and descended all the way back to Dhunche (over 10,000’ of descent) by 5 PM. Complete TR: https://TheMtsAreCalling.com/surya" — Christopher • Nov 9, 2018
