"Went out early to beat the heat & crowds. I parked at the Silica Dome trailhead & took the quick hike up there first. It has great views! I then hiked down the valley toward Baseline Mesa & explored some of the beautiful nearby areas. Went up a slope on the north side of Baseline Mesa. At the top, I had to hike about a 1/4 mile to the summit. The views were spectacular! I descended a different route on the north side through red sandstone. It was quite pretty & fun. I then looped back to Silica Dome. I saw two tortoises on the hike. The entire area is covered in flowers right now & there was a cool breeze making the day really wonderful. I forgot to turn on my GPS until halfway through, but the hike was about 6 miles with 1500 feet of gain." — StudioHoodoo • Apr 22, 2023
"A nice, easy, scenic, and short hike to the site where Captain James Tiberius Kirk (original timeline) tragically lost his life in the epic battle to stop Soran from destroying an entire (inhabited) planetary system so Soran could re-enter the Nexus, a place of dreams and wish-fulfilment. Sadly, the cairn that Captain Jean-Luc Picard built to honor his lost comrade-in-arms no longer exists on top of Silica Dome (nor does the scaffolding from the movie, or really anything else other than a bunch of graffiti), but Trek fans still enjoy coming to Valley of Fire and climbing to the top of Silica Dome to see where the epic final battle scenes from Star Trek: Generations (movie #7) were filmed. You can either scramble down from the parking lot through sandstone waves and formations (taking care to avoid the cryptobiotic soil crusts), or you can do what we did and follow the dirt road and well-established path. Certainly easier...! A gorgeous day for a hike and good company. " — psychikingjes • Jan 18, 2021
"First peak - and a new one for me - in the new year! We were visiting Valley of Fire on the 1st, and I certainly can't resist the lure of something high to scramble up. :) Now I've gotta go back out there and get several more peaks! My friend from the East Coast kindly put up with my ridiculousness and scrambled up with me. She's a champ! We scrambled up the north side of Silica Dome, and then came back down the East face where the old trail is/was." — psychikingjes • Jan 1, 2018
