"Hike with AK. Started from the Tinkham Road exit. Nice little parking lot that's never full, no parking passes required also, and adds an extra bit of hike both ways. Direct sun and low 80's temps. PPP was having one of it's busiest days of the year I'd think. There were ~10 people on that tiny top at the same time when we were there. Had fun on the upper sections getting on 'all fours' for a little scrambling. Maybe my favorite peak around the I-90 shuffle (so far - haven't done them all yet :) ). Another good day in the mountains." — zachmitch • Jul 23, 2023
"Unsuccessful attempt. It was the first snow of the season (good weather on the ground though) and we didn't prepare appropriately. We turned around right under the peak as it was getting pretty sketchy and our hands were numb from the scrambling in snow. Made the right decision to hike another day. Looking forward to the next attempt." — zachmitch • Oct 23, 2022
"PPP HIKE
It’s been over a year since I hiked this trail and I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, I highly recommend this hike for someone that is looking for a hard, but shorter hike with a mix of hiking and scrambling - definitely a good workout! The beginning of the hike starts on the Ira Springs Trail that takes you to Mason Lake, Bandera Mountain and Mount Defiance and then continues onto a narrower trail when the Ira Springs Trail curves to the right. The trail is lush with vegetation and transitions to a beautiful forest canopy through mostly tall hemlock and cedar trees. While the trail is narrow, it is easy to follow and well marked at key points. It gets a little more challenging to see the trail at higher elevations and requires periodic navigation checks/route finding on the way up. The lower part of the trail is characterized by an abundance of sword ferns, Oregon grape, Salal, Moss, Vine Maple and lots of Red Huckleberry.
Bear Grass that is not yet flowering higher up. The hike becomes more of a scramble near the summit.
Until you get to the really steep section, the trail is nice and soft with lots of decayed vegetation, making it easy on the joints.

"Sunset hike up PPP. Beautiful views once we cleared the tree line. Live the ridge hike up. Lots of beargrass blooming, and beautiful carpets of phlox above the trees on the rocks. Summited at 9PM and made it back to car at midnight - dicey coming down in the dark." — markhadland • May 31, 2019
"Trip report from the boys' WTA report
Hello, we are the "little" Mountain Goats, Terrence (12) and Nathan (15) and today we climbed Putrid Pete's Peak. We had unfinished business with PPP, since we were turned back below the summit during our winter attempt. The road up to the trailhead is better than it used to be, and it looks like somebody filled in some potholes. We left the car at 8:30. The beginning of the trail is very flat and easy to follow. Once you get to the split, it gets more steep and less maintained the other trail goes to Dirty Harry's Peak. There are lots of slippery roots, so be careful. After awhile of going up the trees begin to thin out and you emerge onto the open slopes of the mountain. Soon there are some good views, and it gets even more steep. We could barely see the main ridge ahead through the rest, but were able to see across I 90 at some of the mountains - McClellan's Butte, Mount Kent, and the Duke and Duchess were visible.
There is a little bit of route finding required, but overall, it's pretty easy to stay on track after the switchbacks end and the straight up begins. The trail is rocky and tiring but after awhile you get on the ridge. T..." — BryHong8 • Sep 23, 2018
"Went up P3 then traversed the ridge over to Mount Defiance. Took the old Mason Creek Trial down for a fun challenge. Would have added Web Mountain/West Defiance but it looked too sketch for the 2 dogs with us. " — Happyjoecappy • Aug 25, 2018
"Started up early (0715) with only a few vehicles in the parking lot, headed out using the Putrid Pete's trail off of Ira hoping to get a good trail run in. About a mile in and had to transition to power hike/ trek as the terrain wasn't very conducive to running. Trail was fairly clear, although there was about 5 down trees of varying sizes along the way that you had to get over. Definitely glad I had my trekking poles, not sure how going up and going down would have gone had I not had those. Interesting trail, a huge quad burner, but probably just a one summit type trail. Don't see the point or attraction to summit it more than once." — CraigArnold2 • Jul 3, 2018
"Hiked the PPP trail up, traverse to Mount Defiance (did not summit), looped down to Mason Lake and returned via the IRA Spring TH. Somewhat nasty weather early on the PPP ascent. The traverse to Mount Defiance is a bit more interesting than the one to Web Mountain, some great boulder sections, and more forested sections that I recalled from seeing photos - some slippery areas on roots on the path to the Mount Defiance trail. Rain made all rocks slippery. The trail up PPP was the same as my report from a few days ago - a great hike once you pass the tree line - bear grass abounds as well as burnt out stumps and a few single trees from a fire long ago. The ridge traverse is a great hike - would be better with some views (0 for 2 now). Opted not to summit defiance as it was socked in cloud and fog. The trail down to Mason lake is muddy in areas - take some care on roots. The route down to the IRA TH was in good condition. Looking forward to a sunny day for a repeat of this route and a summit of Mount Defiance." — markhadland • Jul 1, 2018
"Summit of Putrid Pete's Peak with a full backpack, traverse to Web Mountain along ridge and down across big boulders and scree to Dirty Harry's Trail at ~3,500 feet and return to Ira Springs Trail Head." — joeerickson • Jun 28, 2018
"Early season loop out of Dirty Harry's TH. Headed up road to the fire training center and then found the old trail from there up Mailbox. Traversed over to Dirty Box (fairly easy) then over to DIrty Harry. Went straight up the west ridge of Dirty Harry which involved some exposed class 4 moves. Then followed the trail down to the basin below Webb, ascended the Talus slop to Web and followed Banana Ridge over P3 and then to Defiance. Dropped down to Mason Lake and then to Ira springs. Then closed the loop out with some running. " — stukesowle • Apr 19, 2016
