A late and leisurely start got me to the summit just before sundown with no flashlight, racing down the slope to get back to the campground before dark. By the time I hit the forest below the alpine lakes, it was near total darkness, with the moonrise still half an hour way. My cell phone lit the way to keep me from stumbling. A beautiful experience.
Route up/down: Wheeler Peak Campground Trail
Saw a small flock (herd?) of bighorn sheep run up onto the trail about 50 yards ahead. Got lost on the way down and had to use some topo/compass tricks to find my route — a good practicum for a teenage hiker. Cold on the summit. Too hungry the whole way. Saw Catalina from the top.
