"There’s a herd path all the way to the summit block, but there’s also many other herd paths that take you over very dicey terrain as well. Figuring out which ones are the right ones is the real challenge of this hike. We enjoyed great weather up to Juniper Saddle, then scrambled up Dark Canyon as the clouds rolled in. By the time we hit the 4th class scramble, the snow started falling and the rock was getting slick. We tagged the summit, then headed down in a snow globe of precipitation that quickly blanketed the upper mountain. The fixed rope really came in handy for the exposed and wet down climb. By the time we were below the canyon, the skies cleared again, and the rest of the trip was uneventful. This was a beautiful and challenging hike. Worth the hype!" — wacbravo • Mar 27, 2021
"The highlight of my three day weekend, the Organ Needle was a tough hike and one that I wasn't sure I would be able to complete. Look for trip reports online for this if you attempt it, for there are a few key pointers that are good to know beforehand. I started on the Modoc mine road, basically only 100-200 yards from Baylor Canyon Rd. So I had a lot of walking up Modoc Mine Rd. initially. The trail was pretty easy to follow though, and when I finally found the section that requires a tougher scramble, there were two ropes already there. I tested them first, and also knew I only needed them (if I really even needed them) for one or two steps. The ropes helped, and after that it was a short scramble to the summit. The views were amazing, and the steepness of these mountains is even more apparent from the summit. I would highly recommend doing this hike. It was amazing to me that I was the only one on the trail from start to finish. I saw only one guy with his dog early on, but he wasn't hiking. It was Labor day weekend and a beautiful day, and not one other person was attempting the Organ Needle that day? Unless they started late? I summited in about three hours and 20..." — ZachTeich • Sep 4, 2016
