"The final two peaks of Rebecca’s Catskill 35 420 Grid quest. She recently turned 70 in January, though you wouldn’t know that from her always upbeat enthusiastic personality and her energetic pursuit of peaks. Befitting she would become 420 Gridder #70.
Assembling at the Shaft road TH for an out and back hike was Mimi, Susan, Tom, Amy and her hubby Qi under mostly cloudy skies with just hints of blue sky showing through. By 11:30 am we were celebrating Rebecca’s finish replete with the presentation of a 420 Grid certificate/sign, 420 Grid patch and a Single Season Winter triangle patch all nicely packaged by the headquarters of Hikers Anonymous.
After numerous photo ops of the whole group and with individuals, she wanted one with me because of my forthcoming move to Reno, we commenced on a snack fest.
On our return the clouds cleared offering blue sky and sun which brought the temps to more spring-like with the ground being completely bare and no need for the micro spikes dangling from our packs. With gaiters removed and footwear changed we relocated to Brio’s in Phoenicia for celebratory pizza and a very large custom cake that more than filled our bellies. Our waitress was ver..." — Nimblefoot • Mar 16, 2024
"Out and back hike of Sherrill and North Dome from Shaft road. Fortunately there was a nicely broken track making for an easy stroll on the peaks. There was an inch or two of fresh powder on top of the packed track making for slippery conditions upon descending Sherrill on my way to North Dome. The low temps( 9* in the PA ) and a fairly constant breeze made the day a bit nippy." — Nimblefoot • Jan 20, 2024
"Spruceton straight shot of West kill, Saint Anne’s, North Dome and Sherrill with Richard, Sherri, Kelly and Maple. Winter-like hike with about an inch white fluff on the ground. Micro spikes on and off all day." — Nimblefoot • Dec 6, 2023
"Mimi, Francine and I did Sherrill and North Dome as an out and back from Shaft road. We managed to reach Sherrill without spikes then they went on and off the remainder of the day for safe descents. The warm temps were melting the snow and ice during the day as we noticed the difference on our return as slippery leaves became our constant hazard till we reached the woods road. These peaks completed my 59th total round of the Cat35." — Nimblefoot • Dec 2, 2023
"A wet and wild hike of Sherrill and North Dome from Shaft road. The forecasted morning showers were a bit heavy, more like a downpour, but brief after I arrived at the parking lot. Once they stopped I headed up expecting to be wet most of the time on this out and back hike. More light showers came and went on my way up to Sherrill, getting me thoroughly soaked, but then on my way over to North Dome the rain clouds moved on letting the sun shine between the scattered fluffy clouds…yay! On my way back the clouds returned but no serious rain fell.
To finish the day I headed up to the deep notch parking lot for quick and dry ascent of Halcott. Two hikes and not a single sole was seen or heard, I guess the less than stellar forecast kept most hikers home." — Nimblefoot • Aug 16, 2023
"Nine of us hiked from the end of Spruceton road to Shaft road. It was nice to do the section of the Devils Path between the two peaks of West Kill, haven’t been through there in years. Fortunately the black flies were not a problem today as temps stayed on the cool side." — Nimblefoot • Jun 6, 2023
"Francine, Peter and I enjoyed a nice saunter over Sherrill and North Dome from Shaft road and back. Started off with spikes on because of a hard crust on the settled snow but shortly up the old woods road the snow softened enough to make wearing snowshoes more prudent. The ‘shoes stayed on the remainder of the day with the sun and spring-like temps to continue softening the snow." — Nimblefoot • Mar 26, 2023
" Francine, Mimi, Donna, Barbara, Richard, Peter and I strolled over North Dome and Sherrill from the Fishermen’s parking lot to Shaft Road. Most of the time we were wearing micro spikes do to the hard crust and ice. Steady flurries dropped more than an inch of fluffy snow that made our descent from Sherrill to the woods road leading to Shaft road a bit challenging. Most of us slipped and fell numerous times, sometimes sliding downhill out of control as the new snow prevented our spikes to bite into the ice properly. Chilly temps all day- low to mid teens." — Nimblefoot • Feb 25, 2023
"Getting Sherrill and North Dome for the month of July. Dark and cloudy at the start added to the feeling of hiking in a rain forest with all the foliage wet from early AM rain showers. On my return to Shaft road the sun was breaking through the clouds making for a more cheerful day. I had time after lunch to head further up the road and visit the canister on Halcott therefore completing my 34th 3-season round." — Nimblefoot • Jul 6, 2022
"Easy stroll of these two peaks from Shaft road on a beautiful sunny day. The ramps are popping up nicely with the wildflowers. Next time I’ll harvest some for the evening salad. On my way out to Kingston stopped by the Visitor center to check out the fire tower for this years fire tower challenge/patch." — Nimblefoot • May 10, 2022
