"Climbed Mount Meru in a 3-day trip. Wondered at elephants and buffalos by the foot among other wildlife. Conquered Little Meru peak and main peak by sunrise. Astounding views of neighboring Kilimanjaro and the vast African plains below.

"An outstanding climb over 3 days, definitely more challenging then Kilimanjaro. Hired a park ranger for protection from wild animals at the gate. Hiked past wild giraffe, cape buffalo and Colobus Monkeys on the southern route the first day, along with the famous arched fig tree. Traversed through the crater to Mariakamba Huts at 2500m with great views of the inner ash cone. The second day we hiked up to Saddle Hut at 3500m and were in clouds most of the day. Started our summit climb at around 2AM. Some great scrambling after Rhino Point and shortly before the summit push. Probably the most spectacular summit I've had with sunrise directly over Kilimanjaro and morning light into the crater just as we hit the summit. From there we descended over 10,000' back to Momella Gate and were completely exhausted.

"One of the most amazing summits I've experienced. Simply awe-struck at sunrise behind kilimanjaro above the clouds on summit morning. Took three days to complete. Approached Mariakamba hut from Momella gate via the southern route on day one, mostly rain, but saw wild giraffe, walked through a fig tree, and a companion jumped right into buffalo poop. Second day were in the clouds to Saddle hut with a brief intermission during a side hike up to little meru. Summited about 630am the following morning, popped champagne at the top with our Ranger Raymond then proceeded to descend about 10k' back to the gate. A very weary task for some sore feet and knees. All in all a magnificent climb and summit experience. " — MooseHiker • Apr 21, 2014
"After walking south from Ethiopia for the previous 7.5 months alone, I had only arrived in Arusha a week prior to heading up Meru. I did it with a Maasai Friend of mine whom I met in Somalia when we fled from Jabhatul Islamiya A rebel group which had helped in the insurgence against Ethiopia. Climbing Meru was the reward after 7.5 months and nearly 5000km (Most of it walked barefoot). We did not higher a ranger and were graced with the most spectacular sunrise of my life on the summit.
