"What a fun little climb. Followed the wash to the appropriate arm marked by a cairn, then climbed the powdery earth up to the saddle. Crux of the scramble is down climbing the steep exposed ridge with the boulders sticking out, but still nothing beyond third class. Bhakti wasn’t feeling this scramble so she waited at the saddle. "Did the "Famous 3-Peak Death Valley Hike" of the 52 Peak Club, also known as the loop from Zabriskie Point to Red Cathedral, Damn Fool Peak, and Manly Beacon. A fun day! This was during the Superbloom of 2016, so Death Valley was carpeted in wildflowers. There was also water in the salt flats; it was such an amazing day with crazy good opportunities for photography. Manly Beacon (I have such a hard time not saying "bacon") is the third and final peak on the loop hike. The texture of the ground is... weird. Soft. Not quite dirt, but kind of dirt. Much like the ground in 20 Mule Team Canyon. Moon-dirt? Just... weird dirt, somewhat sand, somewhat not. Gets in your shoes something crazy, it's very soft and gives way (and you slide a lot) when you break through the crust. The way up Manly Beacon is very steep, but certainly doable.
