"Traversed up Hewes Hill aka "Tippin' Rock" to get to Carroll's hill just to South. The old Farming rd is worth the trip which gets you to other remote parts of West Swanzey and Winchester hills." — mikezilla • Apr 29, 2013
"A Sunday morning hike with my dad. The Tipping Rock was awesome! The views from the ledges were also great, and the ledges themselves looked fun to climb. I will definitely come back again." — GSDTheFlea • Aug 26, 2012
"Traverse over Hewes Hill via the blue blazed trail which actually connects to the next hill to the south east which is called Carroll's Hill which is also protected easement land. The summit lies in the SE corner of the hill at 1073 according to my gps. The blueblaze trail ends just NE from the summit which has a nice view if Brennan Hill and Grand Monadnock just peaking above it. My GPS read 921 ft at Hewes Hill highest point on the NE edge." — mikezilla • May 30, 2012
"Another trip around the Hewes Hill aka Tippin' Rock that features a wonderful ledge trail area with grand views into a small valley of un-developed land with several hill and mountains around with the highest being Franklin Mountain to the South West. The 40 thousand ton Glacial Eratic Boulder known as Tippin' rock has been a popular place to visit in the town of Swanzey since the mid 1800's, with a push in just the right place the giant boulder can gently rock back and forth! Don't hurt your back, two people work best! A trail blazed and blue leads down the hill to the bottom of the cliff ledge area and back again." — mikezilla • Jan 13, 2012
"A quick and always fun late day hike up to "tippin' Rock" AKA Hewes Hill. Near the summit is a series of ledges that are a popular route for rock climbers in this area. As I was soaking in the chilly late day sun-set on one of the high ledges I heard a very loud series of noises in the woods below my perch. A VERY large animal was perhaps breaking a tree, or looking for food but the noise it was making was actually pretty scary. Only a Bear or Moose could possibly make these noises. I couldn't see whatever this was because it was below me on the next level of ledges, as i approached a bit closer in it's direction, it took off fast and loud through the woods making a very intimidating sound as it scattered. Still no idea what this creature was but I left the area right after!!" — mikezilla • Dec 19, 2011
"third trip this year to the "tippin rock" Farm trail which goes up to the summit of Hewes hill with some really nice vistas and cliff areas with nearby Franklin Mountain, snake mountain and Gardiner Mountain along with several others all within easy viewing distance. Near the peak of the hill is the "tippin rock" A 40,000 ton Eradic glacial boulder that can actually be pushed so it tips and rocks back and forth. The views from the cliffs are very nice for the area with a large bowl shaped valley below, a favorite spot for large Turkey Vultures. The trail up is blazed blue with a lower-level trail that runs at the bottom of the massive ledges that is blazed red. The red blazes make a nice loop back to the blues. " — mikezilla • Sep 24, 2011
