"Happy December! 12.1.22~Fortress Butte, Hot Springs Canyon, AZ w/ hiking bestie Laszlo. 4.7 miles, +/- 1,200’ gain. Out and back the HS canyon dry falls/petroglyph route My 4th visit to this peak and it never gets old. Always exciting views ta die fer of the scenic Colorado river and the colorful surrounding Black Canyon Mtns. I love meandering along the rim of its Football Field sized summit. Many hardy Barrel cacti reside atop." — paula.raimondi • Dec 1, 2022
"Descended White Rock Canyon to the Colorado River and to the Arizona Hot Springs, then summited Fortress Butte. On the exit we took the scrambling route up the Class 3 dry falls, a beautiful side canyon. Temps were cool but the day was sunny with only light breezes. Two thumbs up!" — DudeAlmighty • Dec 29, 2021
"I’m raising a big Family of 4 teens/tweens so I can’t get a lot of new peaks that require travel and time. This Mom job is one of the most complex, rewarding and under appreciated jobs that exists and would bring most people to their knees. I’m not the most brave or accomplished mountaineer you’ll ever meet. Not even close. I don’t care about peak lists, keeping up with this person or that person climbing this peak or that peak…I’m satisfied working my body hard no matter where I am. I do what I can cram into my day. I’m happy I live in the most stunning area where I can revisit peaks I have fallen in love with and run in the most scenic landscapes on earth (in between taking care of the Family and household) There are more peaks within 100 miles in every direction of my home I will never have time to climb my lifetime. Don’t compare yourself to others. You never know what they have on their plate. Comparison is the thief of joy. I am great and so are you. :@)
12.7.2021~The LONG way to Fortress Peak, 4 peak jog/trek/scamper. 9 miles, 2,600’ gain, 3:43hrs. Blk Cny Overlook, Liberty Bell Peak & LB Arch overlook. I consumed one liter of water and 1/3 of a Lara bar, my Morning Metamu..." — paula.raimondi • Dec 7, 2021
"11.17.2021~White Rock Canyon Peak & Fortress Butte via Hot Springs Canyon, AZ, w/Adam. 6.3 miles, 2,200’ gain in 3:52hrs. We were greeted in the parking lot by a baby Tarantula which Adam safely relocated so it didn’t get run over by a car. I packed up my bag of tricks & junk, this and that/theses and those for the WRCP crux. We set up protection for this short section using a dead Charlie Brown Christmas shrub as an anchor. After that fun peak, we went on to slay Fortress Butte which is across the canyon. It is a Football Field sized summit speckled with barrel cactuses (is that a word?) It lives up to its namesake since there is only one class 2 passageway up using the creepy exposed ledge of doom and a ramp, both filled with rotten & loose rock. With care, this route is safe and reasonable. It was a pretty morning with warm temps and cool breezes. These rarely visited peaks are 2 of my favorites. They never disappoint. It was my 4th time up WRCP & 2nd time up Fortress Butte.

"1.6.2021~Fortress Butte, AZ towering above Hot Springs Canyon. 5 miles, 1,300’ gain, 2:31hrs. Solo. I’m proud to admit this was my 5th try. Bravery in mountaineering has never come easily for me and I have to fight each time, especially because I strive for independence in the Mtns and find glory and satisfaction doing hard summits solo, without the comfort or guidance of another human. This mountain proved to be a worthy opponent and a test of what I’m really made of. The crux on the final ascent isn’t more than class 2 but it’s on rotten loose volcanic rocks along the slanted narrow ledge of doom. After that, it’s a scramble on a steep slope above a cliffy drop-off and a sketchy climb up the rim of the butte. I took a proud victory lap atop the football field sized summit and lavished in the warm sun. It took all of my courage to climb this beast and step on its head. My 4th try yesterday had me circumnavigating below the bluff in the hopes of finding any other way up but this is truly a nearly impenetrable Fortress. I left defeated but awoke today with determination and focus and climbed up with confidence and vigor. It feels like Spring in the Canyons. I saw Laszlo’s jeep in th..." — paula.raimondi • Jan 6, 2021
