"A mountain's calling is deep when you are called apon to participate in a friends finish of a hiking challenge that's been on my radar now for a few years. Down in the southern part of Lake George hiking with fellow hikers Shane Larose, Samantha Maclean, Craig Boer, Eve Lyn and one other, hiking/climbing Erebus and Sleeping Beauty for Shane's finish of the Lake George 12ster, Congrats! Beautiful day other than the black flies, ugg. Trails where clear, wet in many areas but easy to read. Mountain views from Sleeping beauty were worth the climb for sure, excellent day doing what we love, #3/12" — ramjet1963 • May 6, 2023
"After summiting Sleeping Beauty Lookout we were off to Erebus. Trail was well marked and mostly dry. Erebus is summited only by a poor herd path up the 300' gain from the main trail. And believe me when I say poor trail. The summit is marked only by a small rock pile holding a canteen. Zero view from Erebus. Unless one is looking yo check of the mountain as part of a challenge your effort would be better spent elsewhere. Summited at 12:39. We lost the trail on the way down and bushwacked down through the ledges to return to the main trail. Returned to the car at 2:15." — garyogden • Jun 21, 2022
"This was a LOOOOOOOOONG hike! By starting at the Black Mountain trailhead, and hiking to the summit of Black Mountain, Erebus Mountain and Sleeping Beauty, we covered over 20 miles - a not-insignificant chunk of which was trudging through deep, melting snow as the conditions earlier in the hike had suggested we did not need to bring snowshoes." — RangersApprentice • Mar 7, 2020
"God damn Erebus! I had been wanting to do this for a year or so, chasing the Lake George 12ster patch. Well I did it, bushwhacked to the summit. I have the scratches and bug bites to prove it. There is no view from the summit, just a cairn with a metal canteen on it. There is plenty of poison ivy up there. Would highly recommend long sleeves, gloves, and hiking poles for anyone attempting this. I took the long loop to Fishbrook pond on the way back. It was long and we t with lots of stream crossings. "Bumps Pond + Erebus Mountain s Sleeping Beauty
December 26th, 2018
Bumps Pond
10:31a We started our journey at 9:30 this morning and decided to stop for a rest about half way up Sleeping Beauty going towards Bumps Pond. Looking up you can see the top of Sleeping Beauty and the ice that is forming down the side of it. When we sat down we started talking and all of the sudden a tree that was lying down on a rock above me shifted and fell almost hitting me. Francis said it was because the tree was on ice then he tried to shift it around a little bit but it didn’t move.
10:57a We have reached Bumps Pond. It is apparently pretty thick ice because it held me and Francis in areas where it should be thin. We sat down and enjoyed the view for a moment before heading to the other side of the trail where a large chimney is located. Francis says this is where everyone camps but we are supposed to camp 150 ft away from it into the woods. Around that area we found things like a dirty rag on a tree and a tin can on a tree, both hanging from branches.
Erebus Mountain
11:23a We reached a beaver dam that looks to be frozen solid. Holding back an entire pond which is also frozen. T..." — devenmosher24 • Dec 26, 2018
"Needed Sleeping Beauty and Erebus to complete the Lake George 12ster list. Got a little bit of a later start, but drove all the way to Dacy Clearing now that the road is open. There were lots of cars, but I didn't see any people until the end of the day on my way to the parking lot. Trail to Sleeping Beauty is easy to follow and pretty straight forward, bushwhacked off trail to the true summit, only to be disappointed that the summit sign had been stolen (Lame!). Continued on the trail down to Bump's Pond. From there I took Erebus trail towards the north slope before quickly making my way off trail and just hiking up towards the summit. Took me a little while to find the true summit, only to be disappointed once again that someone had stolen the summit sign. (Lame again!). The fun started on my descent when I decided to bushwhack towards the Fishbrook Pond Trail with hopes of intersecting it close to Bump's Pond, which would have taken out a lot of the steep sections. I didn't bring an actual map (bad idea!), but I did have a screen shot of the map that showed the trails in the area and I did have a compass. I ended up in a drainage area and found the trail right at Fishbrook Pond...." — LGH-Tom • May 12, 2018
"Nice February day but conditions were quite icy. The trail was hard packed so spikes were the rule of the day. I knew going
in that views would be none existent & that did not disappoint. I hiked to the height of land as the challenge suggested & returned
the way I came. Plans by DEC to extend to top of Erebus still in the works." — billsussdorff • Feb 6, 2018
"Midnights to mountains! Solo. After leaving work at 0700, I drove straight up to the trailhead to start this hike. The gate for Dacy Clearing was open, but with snow falling & my being unsure of how much would actually come, I didn’t chance it. It’s a good thing I’m not a brave driver, as a mile into my road walk there was a large downed tree across the road, and a quarter mile after that, another one. I made quick work of the road walk, and was excited to see that the last visitor had been going to this mountain as well. Less trail breaking! I scooted along the trail on snowshoes, precariously tottering over quite a bit of ice but too lazy to switch to spikes. There wasn’t a whole lot of “climbing” to be done. The trail was mostly flat and uneventful. Very peaceful with the new snow as well as the falling snow around me. The trees were all freshly covered and beautiful, and it was absolutely silent other than an airplane passing over once. When I got to Bumps Pond I was rewarded with a nice look at the pond and then headed onto the Erebus trail proper. Turns out, the person who’s tracks I had hoped to be in had turned around about ten feet after the junction. Soon after, I was ank..." — kellieirene • Jan 16, 2018
"Beautiful Spring day, Deb and I figured we would attempt a bush-wack up Erebus from the high point of the trail that is just west of the summit. When we came withing 4 10th's of a mile on the GPS to the summit, we headed east/north east finding a way between/around the cliffs to the shelf about 200' below the summit. Then we worked south to get around the marsh and up to the ridge, working north to the summit. We used ribbons on the trees to mark our return trip. We removed the ribbons as we descended. It took us 1-1/2 hours from the trails high point to the summit. (Actual distance about 1/2 mile.) Finding a path between and around the cliffs was difficult and at times very steep. Loved the bush-wack just wished we had better views from the summit. There was some of Lake George but we didn't get any photos from the summit but some on the way up and back, forgot the camera but had the phone." — hbotc • Apr 23, 2017
"Gate to Dacy Clearing still closed which adds a bit on to this hike, but the road is an early walk in (~1.6 miles). From Dacy Clearing the hike is a set of switchbacks at a steady grade until you reach the Erebus Mtn junction by bumps pond. From here the trail is fairly well marked until a small 0.6 - 0.7 miles stretch where the spring run off and lack of markers made you pay closer attention. The trail is not difficult and is a very enjoyable walk. About half way around the mountain we decided to bushwack up the cliffs for a view and found several points with a nice view of Tongue and the Narrows. Came down in a different area via a series of deer trails and continued around the base back to Dacy Clearing. About 11.5 miles all together, nice hike." — deb-and-rob • May 18, 2014
