"Didn’t visit the actual summit; did the marked public trail which stops short at a viewing platform. I was on a guided tour so didn’t manage to investigate whether any paths continue on. Great views of the crater." — davidb • Jan 15, 2017
"Two routs of access. From the south trail is clear and undisturbed even in the heart of the rainy season. Its tougher to locate becuase of the amount of private homes even on calle Hidalgo. North road is mostly paved, accessed even by pullman busses and much easier to walk or bike. Distance is abt a mile to the ruins." — RobertoJGalindo • Aug 30, 2016
"Based on a rudimentary calculations the highest point was located on the south rim of the main crater about 800 meters East of the viewpoint. Theoretically it could be accessed also off of the pathway that leads to Botos crater, a shorter yet denser approach. " — RobertoJGalindo • Aug 25, 2016
"Highest peak in Alajuela province of Costa Rica. Short walk from the parking. We had excellent views at 8am, but soon tight clouds came. A lot of smoke goes out from the center of the crater. Looks impressive. We also made small detour to the nearby Lake Botos (another crater). Rain-forest full of birds, and other creatures.." — Deividas • May 27, 2013
"Peak is located in one of the beautiful Costa Rica national parks. Cerro Chato lies adjacent to the active Arenal volcano. Unfortunately the latter is impossible to climb (at least for regular hiker). Trail was winding through pastures (~3 km), then became quite steep and muddy (~1.5km). We were lucky to avoid the rain, but in the rain the trail should be extremely slippery. For slip and dirt influence should be seen as a T3 or T3 + rated trails. Quite difficult. Top is full of trees. Because of the low clouds not so much visible around. There is nice greenish lake in the middle of the crater. I saw a few people bathed. Myriads of birds, lizards and other creatures can be spotted. Overall nice hike..." — Deividas • May 24, 2013
