I've done this one about 4 times in 2005 and 2010. Coosa Bald is part of a challenging hike called Coosa Backcountry. Starting from the trailhead in Vogel State Park, one winds through a wooded area before crossing 180 and going through a flattish wooded area for about a half hour before beginning to climb. You'll hear the buzz of dozens of crotch rockets going over Wolfpen gap and nearby Neals gap, but that eventually fades away. The climbing portion goes on for a long time, with some changes in terrain. You are likely not to see anyone else. At the summit, the area is too wooded for views. When you finally descend, the trail is suddenly all gravel and steep. THere's another small bit of climbing and flat trail before finally coming out onto Wolfpen gap, where you cross, often seeing crotch rockets or cyclists doing a 3-gap ride. I've started this late enough in the day (as late as 4pm) that I had to run down 180 to pick the trail back up to get to Vogel before dark. Another time, with more people, and a much earlier start, we crossed over 180 at Wolfpen and went on to do Slaughter Mtn. before descending back to Vogel. This isn't a hike for views at all, but is a great physical challenge.
